Return of Bucs RT Goedeke and DT Kancey Confirmed, C Barton Set to Miss Clash with Saints
Key Updates from Tampa Bay Buccaneers’ Camp
Coach Todd Bowles of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers confirmed on Friday that Luke Goedeke, the starting right tackle, is set to return to the field. Goedeke, who has been sidelined due to a concussion since the first week, has successfully passed the concussion protocol. He is now on track to start Sunday’s game against the Saints, barring any unforeseen issues.
Bowles also shared news about the Bucs’ 2023 first-round draft pick, defensive tackle Calijah Kancey. Kancey is slated to make his comeback from a calf injury that has kept him off the field for the initial five weeks of the season. Meanwhile, Graham Barton, the team’s 2024 first-round draft pick and starting center, will be absent due to a hamstring injury.
“Kancey has fully participated this week, so he is all set to play,” Bowles stated. He also mentioned that the decision on Antoine Winfield’s participation will likely be made close to the game time.
Updates on Injuries and Player Availability
Antoine Winfield Jr, an All-Pro safety who inked a four-year, $84.1 million contract in May, becoming the highest-paid defensive back in NFL history, has been out since Week 1 due to a foot injury. Christian Izien, his substitute, will be unavailable due to elbow and groin injuries, according to Bowles.
Despite a groin injury, Jordan Whitehead, another starting safety for the team, is expected to play. Bowles expressed confidence in Whitehead’s condition, stating that he had two satisfactory days of training.
Running back Rachaad White’s participation will be determined closer to the game, as he is currently nursing a foot injury. Wide receivers Trey Palmer and Kam Johnson will miss the game due to a concussion and an ankle injury, respectively.
The Bucs are looking forward to the return of Jalen McMillan, who has been out for the last two weeks with a hamstring injury.
Coach’s Comments on Luke Goedeke and Robert Hainsey
While acknowledging that Goedeke’s five-game absence might affect his fitness, Bowles expressed optimism about his current condition. “Goedeke looks ready. It’s hard to fully gauge his condition until the game, but he appears fresh and healthy in practice,” Bowles said.
With Barton unavailable, the Bucs will rely on Robert Hainsey, who has started as center for the last two seasons. Bowles referred to Hainsey as a “great luxury” for the team, praising his intelligence, toughness, and chemistry with the team.
