Russell Wilson Likely to be Steelers’ Secondary QB Against Raiders, Suggests Mike Tomlin

Russell Wilson Expected to Return as Steelers’ Backup QB, Says Coach Tomlin

Steeler’s Russell Wilson Recovers from Calf Injury

It appears that Pittsburgh Steelers quarterback Russell Wilson may be returning to active duty for the first time this season, according to coach Mike Tomlin. With a week of active training under his belt, Wilson is anticipated to serve as the secondary quarterback behind Justin Fields in the upcoming game against the Las Vegas Raiders.

Coach Tomlin’s Confidence in Wilson

Following Friday’s practice, Coach Tomlin expressed, “He’s likely to be active as the backup quarterback. I’m impressed by what I’ve witnessed on the field, but we must remember that health and rust are distinct. He has demonstrated his fitness and ability to protect himself throughout the week. The next step is getting him reacquainted with the game.”

Wilson’s Previous Role and Current Health Status

Wilson, aged 35, was appointed as the main quarterback following the training camp. However, due to a recurring calf injury since September 5, he has remained inactive throughout the season and served as the emergency third-string quarterback. Coach Tomlin confirmed Wilson’s health earlier this week after five weeks of limited practice participation. “We’re in a slightly different situation with Russ this week than we’ve been in previous weeks,” Tomlin admitted on Tuesday.

Wilson’s Full Week of Training

On Friday, Coach Tomlin confirmed that Wilson had successfully completed the full week of practice. “I believe he had a good week. He has now demonstrated his fitness. The next step is to remove the rust,” said Tomlin.

Wilson’s Thoughts on His Return

When asked about his expectations for Sunday’s game, Wilson refrained from giving definite responses during his Thursday interaction with the local press. “That’s a complex question,” Wilson responded with a laugh. “I’m preparing myself mentally and physically to get back in the game and contribute in any way I can to help us win.”

Wilson’s Confidence Despite Limited Practice

Despite being a limited participant in practice, Wilson, who continued to participate in 7-on-7 and individual exercises, expressed no concerns about potential rust accumulation from missing full team practice sessions. “I’ve been participating in all the reps. I’ve been out there, actively involved. I’ve accumulated a considerable amount of reps over this time and feel highly confident with our team. I’m not worried about rust,” Wilson stated.

Anticipated Player Returns to Strengthen Steelers

Wilson Eyes Return Against Raiders

There’s great potential for Wilson to be back in action against the Raiders. This development not only means an active Wilson on the field, but it could also serve as a significant enhancement for the Steelers’ running game.

Jaylen Warren: An Added Boost?

Another potential boost could come from Jaylen Warren. Despite missing two games due to a knee injury and initial doubts from coach Tomlin about his play against the Raiders earlier in the week, Warren’s recent practice performance has shifted the odds. Tomlin has now placed Warren in the ‘questionable’ category for the upcoming game.

Warren’s Practise Performance

“Warren has fully participated in today’s practice,” revealed Tomlin, who added, “He is on an encouraging streak, showing signs of improvement.”
