Unexpected Twist: Steelers’ Starting Right Tackle Fautanu’s Injury Sidelines Him Indefinitely
Steeler’s Right Tackle Troy Fautanu Faces Unforeseen Injury
Pittsburgh Steelers’ starting right tackle Troy Fautanu had sustained a knee injury during practice. According to insider sources, Fautanu’s injury has him sidelined for an indefinite period. The rookie player, who was the Steelers’ first-round pick in 2024, was scheduled to make his second career start against the Los Angeles Chargers. Unfortunately, a knee injury during Friday’s practice has put those plans on hold.
Fautanu’s Injury and Its Implications
Broderick Jones, Fautanu’s fellow tackle, revealed that Fautanu experienced “a little tweak” during Friday’s practice session. As a result, he will undergo an MRI to assess the extent of the damage. “We’re uncertain about his status,” stated Jones about Fautanu’s situation. “I stepped in for him, and we’ll adapt accordingly based on the MRI results.”
On Saturday, the Steelers officially announced Fautanu’s inability to play against the Chargers.
Opportunity for Jones as Fautanu Recovers
With Fautanu’s absence, Jones, whom the Steelers had acquired as the 14th overall pick in the 2023 draft, gets a chance to redeem his performance after a less-than-stellar showing against the Denver Broncos. “It’s no big deal,” said Jones about his new role. “It’s not some magical situation, so when my name is called, I just need to rise to the occasion.”
Concerns About Fautanu’s Conditioning and Jones’ Penalties
Fautanu had replaced Jones as the starter against Denver, but Head Coach Mike Tomlin had planned to alternate between the two tackles. However, Jones’ penalties led to his replacement on the bench. “I wanted to use both players,” Tomlin expressed. “Recognizing Troy’s health and ability, I started him. However, due to my concerns about his conditioning, I planned for Broderick’s involvement. But when Broderick’s penalties increased, I had to rethink my strategy.”
Steeler’s Offensive Line Faces Multiple Injuries
Fautanu’s injury is the latest in a series of setbacks for the offensive line. Center Nate Herbig is out for the season due to a rotator cuff tear, and veteran guard Isaac Seumalo has been absent for the first two weeks after injuring his pectoral muscle during practice.
Fautanu’s Earlier MCL Sprain and Tomlin’s Praise
Fautanu had previously experienced an MCL sprain during the Steelers’ opening preseason game in August, which led to his absence for the rest of the preseason. Despite this, Tomlin praised his performance, which had led to his selection as a starter before the latest injury. “Troy was on fire,” Tomlin stated. “I don’t usually discuss much about rookies during the preseason, but my decision to include him in the lineup should give an idea of his contribution to the team development.”
