Stafford’s Deep Ball to Robinson Seals Overtime Victory for Rams Over Seahawks
Robinson’s One-Handed Catch Clinches Overtime Triumph for Rams
Los Angeles Rams Demarcus Robinson stole the spotlight on Sunday with a phenomenal one-handed touchdown catch, a 39-yard beauty in overtime that secured a 26-20 triumph over the Seattle Seahawks. The architect of the marvelous deep ball, Matthew Stafford, however, pointed to an earlier defensive play as the game’s turning point.
The Defensive Play That Paved the Way
Beginning the overtime with possession, the Seahawks advanced to the Rams 16 and boldly chose to go for it on fourth-and-1 instead of aiming for a field goal. Kenneth Walker III was halted without gain by Bobby Brown III and Omar Speights, paving the way for Stafford and the Rams’ offense to take the field.
Stafford said, “If we don’t get the ball right there, we don’t get a chance,” crediting the defense for securing possession. “The defense did a hell of a job getting us the ball back.”
Robinson’s Game-Winning Touchdown
Although a field goal would have sufficed, Stafford aimed for the victory, and Robinson delivered spectacularly. With Riq Woolen on his tail, Robinson managed to secure the ball with a single hand in the end zone, holding onto it as he tumbled to the ground. The ecstatic Rams mobbed their hero as he spiked the ball in celebration.
Stafford ended the game with 298 passing yards, two touchdowns, and one interception, helping the Rams (4-4) secure their third consecutive victory after a streak of losing four out of five games. Robinson caught six balls for 94 yards, scoring both touchdowns.
Seahawks Struggling to Find Form
Geno Smith threw for 363 yards, three touchdowns, and three interceptions for the Seahawks (4-5), who have now suffered four consecutive home losses and five of their last six games, landing them at the bottom of the tight NFC West. Jaxon Smith-Njigba stood out with seven catches for a career-high 180 yards and two touchdowns.
The Seahawks are now looking forward to a much-needed bye week to regroup. “We’ve got the right guys, we just have to make it come to life,” first-year Seattle coach Mike Macdonald said. “But our back’s against the walls and we’ve got to go.”
Rams Overcome 13-3 Deficit
The Rams managed to recover from a 13-3 deficit and took a 20-13 lead on Kamren Kinchens’ 103-yard interception return early in the fourth quarter. However, the Seahawks managed to tie it when Smith connected with Smith-Njigba for a 14-yard touchdown with 51 seconds left.
Despite the late tie, the Rams held their nerve. Stafford’s attempted drive for a winning field goal stalled near midfield, leading to a punt and setting up the thrilling overtime.
The drama-filled game saw Kinchens earn two of the Rams’ three interceptions of Smith, both in the red zone in the fourth quarter. On first-and-goal from the 6, Smith was under pressure and made a poor throw directly to Kinchens, who sprinted the length of the field for a franchise-record pick-6.
A Game of Highs and Lows
Robinson stepped up for the Rams after receiver Puka Nacua was ejected in the second quarter for throwing a punch at Seahawks linebacker Tyrel Dodson following an interception by Woolen. Nacua later referred to the incident as a learning experience.
“It was an up and down game,” Stafford said, highlighting the numerous turnovers, a failed scoring attempt from the 1, and a punt block. “It took a lot of mental fortitude and strength and belief to win that.”
Upcoming Games for Rams and Seahawks
The Rams are set to host Miami in a Monday night game on Nov. 11, while the Seahawks, after their bye, will visit San Francisco on Nov. 17.
