Mayor Confirms Cleveland Browns’ Progress on Innovative Dome Stadium Project
Cleveland Browns Unveil Plans for New Domed Stadium in Suburban Brook Park
Mayor Bibb’s Disappointment with the Haslam Sports Group’s Decision
The Cleveland Browns have officially notified the city of Cleveland about their plans to establish a new domed stadium in suburban Brook Park. This news was publicly declared by Mayor Justin Bibb at a press conference held at the city hall. The Mayor expressed his deep dissatisfaction with the Haslam Sports Group’s decision, the owners of the Browns, to abandon the existing lakefront stadium.
“Our city’s approach is always centered on fiscal responsibility and creating long-term value for all community members,” stated Bibb. “Hence, I am profoundly disappointed that despite our relentless efforts, the Haslam Sports Group has decided to relocate to Brook Park.”
The Browns’ New Stadium and the City’s Counteroffer
Earlier in August, Cleveland proposed a $1.2 billion renovation plan for the current 65,000-seat stadium and its adjoining property, with $461 million being contributed by the city itself. Furthermore, the city proposed a 30-year lease extension for the team, whose current lease expires after the 2028 season. Mayor Bibb requested a response from the Browns by August 12.
Supporting the renovation proposal, Cuyahoga County officials penned a letter to the Haslams, affirming their commitment to keeping the NFL team in downtown Cleveland for future generations. The Browns, who have been playing on Lake Erie’s shores since their inception in 1946, built their present stadium in 1999 after returning as an expansion franchise. Despite recent upgrades, the stadium’s location has led to severe traffic problems and a lack of parking.
The Browns’ Response and Future Plans
Reacting to the city’s proposal, the Browns unveiled designs for a $2.4 billion advanced stadium and entertainment complex, approximately 15 miles south of Cleveland. The Haslams are advocating for a 50-50 private/public partnership for the stadium’s construction.
“Similar to other markets in the Midwest, this proposed domed stadium will be a major catalyst for our region,” the team stated in a letter to fans in August. “The stadium’s year-round activity will serve as the cornerstone of a large lifestyle and entertainment district, comprising experiential retail, residential space, hotels, and other unique products, attracting visitors all year round and generating substantial economic impact for our region.”
