Mahomes Underperforms Yet The Chiefs Maintain Winning Streak
Patrick Mahomes: Journeyman Performances, Unbeaten Chiefs
A Unique Performance by Mahomes
This game saw Patrick Mahomes’ stats displaying more of a journeyman quarterback than the two-time MVP we’re used to. Despite throwing two interceptions and scoring no touchdowns against the San Francisco 49ers, Mahomes’ season tally stands at eight interceptions and six touchdowns.
Chiefs’ Unbeaten Streak
However, the Kansas City Chiefs’ winning streak remains unbroken. With a 6-0 record after defeating the 49ers 28-18, Mahomes believes this is a testament to the team’s strength. “We’re not seeing as many passing touchdowns as usual,” Mahomes commented. “The number of turnovers, particularly by me, has increased. But this just shows the versatility of our team. It’s about playing team football. I’m confident that our offensive game will improve as we continue to work on throwing the ball downfield.”
Chiefs’ Victory Over 49ers
The Chiefs’ triumph over the 49ers was attributed to a robust defense that intercepted 49ers quarterback Brock Purdy three times, a punt return unit that propelled receiver Mecole Hardman 55 yards to set up a touchdown, and a robust running game that delivered 184 yards. Despite being sacked twice and throwing two interceptions, Mahomes managed to pass for 154 yards.
Mahomes on Interceptions
Mahomes expressed that these interceptions differed from his early-season ones, citing bad luck rather than poor decisions. One interception was deflected by a 49er defender, while the other happened when rookie receiver Xavier Worthy tripped during a route. “I need to tidy up my game,” Mahomes admitted. “I’ve thrown too many interceptions, which puts our defense in a difficult position. To make further progress, I’ve got to take care of the ball, score touchdowns in the red zone like we did today, and let our defense shine.”
Physicality of the Game
The game was not without its share of physical confrontations. Mahomes was struck in the throat by defensive lineman Maliek Collins, but he didn’t believe it was deliberate. In another incident, he ran into safety Malik Mustapha and knocked him down while scoring a touchdown, although he insisted it was unintentional. He attributed the power to his “dad bod”. “I wasn’t exactly looking for contact,” he said. “I was trying to brace myself and reach the end zone, and it just happened to work out well for me.”
