Kansas City Chiefs’ Squad Update: Kareem Hunt’s Return and Future Game Prospects

Latest Developments in Kansas City Chiefs’ Squad

Kareem Hunt: Newly Inducted but Not Playing Yet

The Kansas City Chiefs have recently added Kareem Hunt, the running back, to their practice squad. However, Hunt will not be featuring in the upcoming Sunday night’s face-off against the Atlanta Falcons, as confirmed by coach Andy Reid on Friday. “We’ll assess his progress in the week ahead and evaluate his readiness,” Reid commented.

During the week, Hunt participated in significant practice sessions with the scout team, which served as a good opportunity for him to reintegrate into the football routine. “He performed well. He is in fairly good shape now. To gauge his complete readiness, he needs to play a football game at some point. However, he arrived in good form, which is a positive sign,” Reid added.

Running Back Choices for the Chiefs

For the upcoming clash against the Falcons, the Chiefs have decided to proceed with rookie Carson Steele, who is undrafted, veteran Samaje Perine, and Keaontay Ingram. Ingram was recently upgraded from the practice squad.

The Chiefs decided to bring in Hunt to the practice squad after Isiah Pacheco suffered a broken fibula which led to his placement on the injured reserve list this week.

Hunt’s Track Record with the Chiefs

The Chiefs initially picked Hunt in the third round of the 2017 draft, the same year they secured Patrick Mahomes. Hunt made a significant impact in his debut season, leading the league with 1,327 rushing yards, catching 53 passes, and scoring 11 touchdowns. He was progressing well towards another 1,000-yard season in 2018, but a video of him pushing a woman outside his residence led to his placement on the commissioner’s exempt list. Consequently, the Chiefs released Hunt due to a lack of truthfulness regarding the incident.

In the last five seasons, 29-year-old Hunt played for his hometown Cleveland Browns. His most productive season was in 2020 when he accumulated 841 rushing yards and caught 38 passes. In the previous season, Hunt rushed for 411 yards and caught 15 passes.
