Exciting Trade Brings RB Cam Akers Back to the Vikings from the Texans
Minnesota Vikings Reacquire Cam Akers: A Detailed Breakdown
Vikings Secure Cam Akers in a Trade Deal with Texans
Details of the Trade
The Minnesota Vikings have announced the reacquisition of running back Cam Akers. This marks the second time in a year that Akers has joined the Vikings, this time being traded from the Houston Texans. Confirmed on Tuesday, the deal involves an exchange of conditional draft picks for 2026. The Vikings will swap a sixth-round 2026 conditional draft pick for a seventh-round pick from the Texans.
Cam Akers stepped up in two games this season for the Texans, filling in for injured players Joe Mixon and Dameon Pierce. His notable performance includes a game against the Vikings in Week 3, where he made nine rushes for 21 yards. Overall, his Houston record stands at 147 yards and one touchdown from 40 carries.
Implications of the Trade
The Vikings’ acquisition of Akers comes with Joe Mixon and Dameon Pierce returning to the Texans, rendering Akers surplus to requirements. Vikings’ starter Aaron Jones’ short-term availability is uncertain due to a right hip injury, leaving a gap that Ty Chandler is expected to fill. However, the addition of Akers provides the Vikings with a stronger depth than current third option, Myles Gaskin.
Akers’ History with Vikings’ Leadership
Coach-Player Bond
Akers has previously worked with Vikings’ coach Kevin O’Connell and offensive coordinator Wes Phillips during their time together at the Los Angeles Rams in 2020 and 2021. The Vikings initially acquired Akers from the Rams early in the 2023 season. He participated in six games, rushing for 138 yards and a touchdown from 38 carries before a left Achilles tendon tear in Week 9 ended his stint.
Interestingly, Akers had a similar injury while with the Rams in 2021, tearing his right Achilles tendon. The Vikings attempted to re-sign him before the summer training camp this year, but Akers opted to join the Texans instead.
Coach O’Connell’s Endorsement
“I have high regard for Cam Akers,” O’Connell shared. “Cam possesses a unique blend of talent and resilience. Despite the adversities he’s faced in his young career, he has never shown self-pity. He’s an extremely tough player, both mentally and physically… I value our relationship and care for him deeply.”
