New York Giants Face a Setback: Key Player Graham Gano Sidelined Due to Injury
Star Kicker Graham Gano Sidelined Indefinitely Due to Injury, Leaving the New York Giants in a Conundrum
Unexpected Player Injury Shakes the Giants
Graham Gano, the popular kicker for the New York Giants, is expected to be out of action for a significant period due to a hamstring injury, as confirmed by team coach Brian Daboll. Gano, who was already battling a groin injury before the Giants’ 21-18 defeat to the Washington Commanders, aggravated his condition during the match. His hamstring injury occurred while attempting to tackle the opposition’s returner following the opening kickoff, leaving the Giants without a kicker for the rest of the match. Both injuries affected Gano’s kicking leg.
Future Course of Action
“We are monitoring his condition, and it’s likely he will be out for a few weeks,” stated Daboll on Monday. In response to the situation, the Giants are planning to conduct a kicker workout this week with the aim of bringing a seasoned player onboard. Currently, the Giants have rookie Jude McAtamney, an uncontracted free agent from Rutgers, as part of the practice squad under an international pathway roster exemption.
Gano’s Potential Replacement
Gano praised McAtamney saying, “He’s been performing exceptionally well, possessing a highly skilled leg. I see him playing in the future, given his potential…He’s been putting in tremendous effort and undoubtedly has a promising future ahead.” There’s a possibility that Gano, 37, might have to be placed on injured reserve. He first appeared on the injury list on Saturday due to the groin issue. The hamstring injury severely hampered his mobility and flexibility post-game.
Daboll’s Decision Draws Criticism
Daboll faced backlash for not having a backup plan ready for Gano, who was visibly struggling even before the match. Gano confessed that he was experiencing discomfort due to the groin injury during the pre-game warmups. He even had his groin wrapped at one point. The absence of a kicker for almost the entire game proved detrimental to the Giants. After their first touchdown, punter Jamie Gillan missed an extra point attempt, and Daboll refrained from kicking for the rest of the game.
Unfortunate Repetition of History
This situation is a painful reminder for the Giants, who faced a similar predicament last year when Gano attempted to play through an injury. This led to him missing two achievable kicks during an overtime loss to the New York Jets. He eventually had to undergo surgery and was absent for the remaining nine games of the season. After returning and performing well during the summer, Gano successfully scored his first two field goals of the season, including one from 50 yards.
