Lions Secure David Montgomery for Another 2 Years with a $18M Deal

David Montgomery Secures Contract Extension with Detroit Lions

Running Back David Montgomery Inks Two-Year Extension

Running back David Montgomery has secured a two-year, $18.25 million extension with the Detroit Lions, keeping him with the team until the end of the 2027 season. The new contract includes a guaranteed $10.5 million, making Montgomery the seventh highest-paid running back in the NFL based on new money per year ($9.125M). The Lions officially announced the extension on Saturday night but refrained from revealing further details.

Why Montgomery’s Extension Matters

Despite having two years remaining on his existing contract, the Lions chose to lock down their dynamic backfield duo of Montgomery and second-year back Jahmyr Gibbs early on. Montgomery, currently aged 27, ranks as Detroit’s second highest rusher, having clocked up 271 yards and four touchdowns on a team-high 63 carries this season. Meanwhile, Gibbs has accumulated 285 rushing yards on 54 attempts with three touchdowns to his name.

Montgomery’s Journey with the Lions

Montgomery initially joined the Lions in 2023, signing as an unrestricted free agent after his first four seasons with the Chicago Bears. He has since started all 18 games he has played with the Lions. After the Lions’ Week 4 victory over the Seattle Seahawks, Gibbs expressed his belief that he and Montgomery form the NFL’s top running back duo, stating, “We both can do everything, so it’s hard for defenses to scheme up against us. I mean the production speaks for itself, too.”

Montgomery’s Record-Breaking Streak

Montgomery has achieved a rushing touchdown in seven consecutive games, equaling the record set by Billy Sims (1980-81) for the longest streak in the team’s history. Since joining the Lions, Montgomery has secured 17 rushing touchdowns, the fourth-highest in the league during this period. Only Derrick Henry (18), Raheem Mostert (18), and Kyren Williams (18) have scored more.
