Kirk Cousins Steers Atlanta Falcons to Pivotal Victory Over Struggling Dallas Cowboys
Atlanta Falcons Triumph in NFC South Battle, Thanks to Kirk Cousins’ Stellar Performance
Kirk Cousins: The Missing Piece in the Falcons’ Puzzle
For those closely following the Atlanta Falcons journey over the recent seasons, it’s clear that the team’s most glaring weakness has been the absence of a top-tier quarterback. Enter Kirk Cousins, whose addition to the squad filled a much-needed gap. In Sunday’s match against the Dallas Cowboys, Cousins threw three touchdown passes, propelling the Falcons to assert their dominance in the NFC South with a 27-21 victory.
Cousins, demonstrating precision and prowess, completed 19 of his 24 passes for 222 yards. This included a remarkable streak of 13 consecutive successful passes for the Falcons, who now hold a 6-3 record. Cousins’ scoring plays spanned 9 yards to Drake London, 36 yards to Darnell Mooney, and 11 yards to Ray-Ray McCloud. This marked his third three-touchdown game in his inaugural season with the Falcons.
Cousins’ Impact: More Than Just Another Player
When asked about the value Cousins brings to the Falcons, McCloud was quick to praise the 36-year-old quarterback. “He brings wisdom, calmness, and maintains our hunger for victory even when he’s off his game,” he said. “Having a seasoned player like him is like having another coach on the field.”
Cousins, who signed a four-year, $180 million contract during free agency, saw great potential in Atlanta. While the celebrations are on hold for now, he’s definitely feeling the positive vibes around a team that’s been yearning for a winning season since 2017.
Allgeier Seals the Victory, Cowboys Struggle Continues
Tyler Allgeier put the finishing touches on the Falcons’ fifth triumph in six games, bulldozing into the end zone from 6 yards out with just over 11 minutes left. The Cowboys, already reeling from their third consecutive defeat and the loss of quarterback Dak Prescott due to a hamstring injury, couldn’t rally adequately.
The Cowboys’ losing streak is their longest since the 2020 season, a particularly tough time when they ended with a 6-10 record. This loss also equals their total losses for each of the past three seasons. Dallas coach, Mike McCarthy, will likely face increased scrutiny following this performance.
McCloud and Mooney Step Up, Falcons’ Defense Shines
The Falcons suffered a blow in the first quarter when top receiver Drake London exited the game due to a hard hit on his right hip. However, receivers Darnell Mooney and Ray-Ray McCloud stepped into the breach. Mooney made five catches for 88 yards, while McCloud got his first TD of the season, pushing the Falcons’ lead to 21-10 early in the third quarter.
Atlanta’s strong defense also had a standout performer in Kaeden Ellis, who amassed a team-high 13 tackles, including a sack and a crucial stop on Cowboys’ CeeDee Lamb on fourth down.
Looking Ahead
The Cowboys will host the Philadelphia Eagles next Sunday in an NFC East showdown. The Falcons, on the other hand, will face the Saints in New Orleans, hoping to replicate their previous 26-24 victory on Sept. 29.
